Congratulations to Alaine Chartrand on her senior women free competition win at the 2019 National Skating Championships this past weekend
Augusta Matters by Mayor Doug Malanka
On Saturday, January 19, 2019 Alaine Chartrand finished the day by capturing gold in the senior women’s free skating competition at the 2019 National Skating Championships at Saint John, New Brunswick. Alaine started the day in fifth place but battled from behind to win. Augusta Township Council, Staff and residents congratulate one of their own for a stellar career in figure skating. Following her win, Alaine was quoted as saying, “I’m skating because I want to keep skating. “I’m taking skating as the opportunities and privileges I’ve gained, and I’m trying to take advantage of that‑‑‑I just want to be happy at the end of my skate.” Alaine currently resides in Toronto to take kinesiology at York University. Augusta residents have proudly watched the career of one of its own former residents and we wish her happiness and success wherever life takes her. Alaine is a model for everyone in South Grenville, especially youth, to set high goals and achieve success through commitment, determination and hard work.
For the last four years Augusta Township, the Town of Prescott and the Township of Edwardsburgh Cardinal have jointly sponsored the annual Joint Business Showcase Exhibition. While the event has enjoyed success over the years, Mayors of the three partnership municipalities recently agreed to stand down the 2019 Annual Business Showcase and Exhibition following an announcement by David Annable of Annable Designs to the January 7th, 2019 meeting of Augusta Township’s Economic Development and Tourism Committee (EDTC). David, a member of Augusta’s EDTC, announced that the Leeds and Grenville Approved Professionals will hold the LG Small Business and Trade Show at the Leo Boivin Arena in Prescott on March 8th and 9th, 2019. Augusta and Edwardsburgh-Cardinal Townships and the Town of Prescott jointly welcomes the business retention and expansion initiative of the LG Approved Professionals and supports the LG Small Business and Trade Show. Exhibitors and the public are encouraged to participate in this important event. Hope to see you there.
On a final note, residents are reminded that the Township has partnered with the Augusta Township Library to offer sports equipment on loan to its residents. There is everything there for all seasons from snow shoes to kayaks. I encourage residents to make a special trip to the Library and check this program out. Remember, physical exercise and activities in the great outdoors are essential for growth, development and well‑being. The Library also reminds everyone that they are having a Harry Potter Night on Thursday, February 7th, 2019 at 6 pm.
