For the second month in a row, the number of Canadians killed in trespassing and crossing incidents was up compared to the year before. And once again, crossing fatalities were also above the five-year average for the month. These statistics are especially shocking when we realize that one of these deaths happened right here in Augusta Township.
Each year, more than a hundred Canadians die or suffer serious injuries as a result of trespassing incidents on railway property or collisions at crossings.
Operation Lifesaver (OL) is dedicated to preventing collisions at railway crossings and railway trespassing incidents in Canada. Funded by the Railway Association of Canada and Transport Canada, they work with the rail industry, governments, law enforcement, labour groups, the media, and other organizations and communities from coast to coast to increase awareness about rail safety.
CN Rail in partnership with Operation Lifesaver has provided the Township with a few Railway Safety Tips brochures. Augusta Township is committed to keeping our residents safe so please take a few minutes to review this information and share it with family and friends.
