The Township of Augusta is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and enjoyable community for everyone. The Noise By-Law 3704-2024 helps balance everyday activities with the right of residents to enjoy peace and quiet in their homes.
The by-law establishes rules for when and how noise may occur within the Township, identifies activities that are prohibited or restricted, and outlines exemptions, enforcement, and penalties. The intent of the by-law is to balance everyday activities with the right of residents to enjoy their homes and community without unnecessary disturbance.
General Noise Rules
No person shall emit, cause, or permit the emission of noise that is likely to disturb any person in the Township.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- The operation of electronic devices or equipment used to produce or amplify sound, including speakers, stereos, musical instruments, microphones, or similar devices
- The operation of construction equipment, combustion engines, or pneumatic devices without proper exhaust or intake muffling equipment in good working order
- Excessive revving of a motor vehicle engine, except where required for mechanical servicing
- The use of motor vehicle horns or warning devices, except where required for safety or permitted by law
- Persistent barking, calling, whining, or noise from a domestic animal (excluding animals used for agricultural purposes)
Fine: $200 per offence
Quiet Hours & Time-Based Noise Restrictions
During the following hours, additional noise restrictions apply:
Quiet Hours
- Monday to Friday: 11:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.
- Saturday & Sunday: 11:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m.
During these times, the following are prohibited:
- Operation of construction equipment or tools
- Lawn and property maintenance equipment, including mowers, blowers, and chainsaws
- Yelling, shouting, whistling, or loud vocal noise
- Noise associated with community or private events
- Fireworks or similar pyrotechnic devices
- (Exception: January 1, when restrictions apply from 1:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.)
Fine: $200 per offence
Noise Exemptions
The Noise By-Law does not apply to noise resulting from:
- Emergency measures taken to protect life, safety, or property
- Emergency services, utilities, or essential services
- Snow plowing, snow blowing, or snow removal
- Township operations or work carried out by Township staff or contractors
- Normal farm practices in accordance with the Farm Practices Protection Act
- Church bells, chimes, and religious or cultural celebrations
- Activities conducted in accordance with approved commercial or industrial zoning
- Approved community or private events
- Aircraft, railways, and transportation regulated by other levels of government
- Generators used during power outages or required testing
Applying for a Noise Exemption
A temporary exemption may be requested for special events or activities.
Important Information:
- Applications must be submitted at least 45 days before the event
- A separate application is required for each event
- Exemptions for private or community events may only extend to:
1:00 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Statutory Holidays
- A $25 non-refundable fee applies per application
- Exemptions may be approved, denied, or approved with conditions

Please note: The $25 application fee must be received before an exemption can be issued.
Enforcement & Penalties
- The Noise By-Law is enforced by Township By-Law Enforcement Officers and Police
- Officers may enter a property in accordance with the Municipal Act
- Violations may result in:
- Set fines under the Provincial Offences Act
- Orders to stop or correct the noise
- Further legal action if necessary
Failure to comply with the by-law or the conditions of an approved exemption may result in enforcement action.
