Township Officers/Committee Members Needed

Augusta Township is currently looking for members for the following positions/committees:

  • Committee of Adjustment
  • Line Fence Viewers
  • Livestock Evaluators
  • Rental Property Standards Committee

These positions will be appointed by Council for the length of the current term of Council (November 15, 2022 – November 14, 2026).  See below for more information on each of the positions:

 

Committee of Adjustment

The Committee of Adjustment is a decision-making body who considers the following types of Planning Act Applications:

  • Minor Variance Applications, to authorize variances/relief from the provisions of the Zoning By-law, with respect to a proposed building/structure or use; and
  • Extensions or Enlargements of a legal non-conforming building/structure or use

Members:

  • review the submitted application and the notice of hearing;
  • independently undertake site visits and assess applications;
  • attend the Committee of Adjustment meeting to assess the Planning Act considerations (4 tests of a Minor Variance) and receive any comments by property owners, circulated agencies and staff; and
  • make a Decision at the hearing

The Committee only meets when there is a filed application received.  Decisions need to be made within 30 days of receipt of a filed application.

Membership: Three (3) public representatives appointed by Council for the term of Council or until reappointed.

Time Commitment: Committee of Adjustment shall meet as frequently as required (7 applications were received in 2022).

Line Fence Viewers

Mandate:

The Fence Viewers will follow the guidelines of the Line Fences Act and provide resolutions to disputes between owners of adjourning properties.

Under the Act, three fence-viewers are required to be present at a viewing, and they are only authorized to address one or both of the following issues:

  • the apportionment of responsibility for the fencing work between the two adjoining owners
  • the description of the fence that is to be constructed or reconstructed on the boundary line, including the materials to be used

After the viewing, the fence-viewers issue an award and allocate the costs of the proceeding between the two owners.

Membership: Three (3) public representatives appointed by Council for the term of Council or until reappointed.

Time Commitment: The Fence Viewers shall meet as frequently as required.

Livestock Evaluators

The Ontario Wildlife Damage Compensation Program (OWDCP) provides financial assistance to producers whose livestock, poultry or honey bees have been damaged or killed by wildlife.  Evaluators are responsible for carrying out a full and impartial investigation within 72 hours of receiving the notification of the injury or death of livestock or poultry.  They must also take three to six colour photos per eligible kill/injury incurred and document all necessary information to accurately complete the application.  Evaluators are responsible for providing a completed program application to the owner and the municipality within seven business days of completing an investigation.  

Membership: Three (3) public representatives appointed by Council for the term of Council or until reappointed.

Time Commitment: This is dependent on the number of applications filed.

Rental Property Standards Committee

The Property Standards Committee is a quasi-judicial committee that hears appeals and makes decisions related to orders issued by the Rental Property Standards Officer regarding the Rental Property Standards By-Law (2399-2000) in Augusta.  This committee follows the regulations set out in the Rental Property Standards By-Law and the Ontario Building Code.

Membership: Three (3) public representatives appointed by Council for the term of Council or until reappointed.

Time Commitment: Members shall meet as frequently as required.
